Author/Photographer/Scientist

David Maitland is an internationally acclaimed nature and science photographer who specializes in small and microscopic forms. He has a BSc Hons (St Andrews) and a Doctorate (UNSW) in Zoology, and is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

David’s academic research has focused on the form and function of living things, especially invertebrates, and his publication list includes Nature papers on how maggots jump; crabs that breathe air with their legs; and asymmetry in the predation of trilobites.

Photography has always featured prominently in his work, and he now combines an academic viewpoint with a sense of enquiry combining art and science. His specialist macro and microscopy skills have been used by the BBC for the ‘Science of Food’, ‘Wonders of Life’, and ‘Human Universe’ series.

David is the recipient of international photography awards including POYi, Sony World Photography Awards, WPOY, British Photography Awards, European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Nikon Small World, Olympus Image of the Year, and he has been a winner of the International Images for Science and the RPS Gold Medal.

He has been a jury panel member on leading international photography competitions including: European Wildlife Photographer of the Year; MontPhoto; and HIPA, Dubai. He is a longstanding member of the judging panel for the Close-Up Photographer of the Year competition.

As an academic, David lectured at Universities and international conferences, and he currently uses his photographs and presentation skills to raise awareness and understanding of the natural world and science at a variety of venues, both in the UK and abroad.

David lives in St Andrews, Scotland.
